Heritage and Archaeology

As part of our expanding provision of in-house services, Crestwood Environmental have now appointed David Leigh as our new Senior Consultant for Heritage and Archaeology.

David has over 25 years’ experience in the Heritage and Archaeological sector having undertaken projects both in the field of academic research and in the commercial private sector throughout the UK and further afield, working on projects across the Mediterranean including Greece, Cyprus and Crete.

Prior to his archaeological career David worked for a number of years in the construction industry, both on residential and commercial/industrial developments, through which he gained experience of working with a wide range of construction methodologies both historical and modern. The experience gained has provided him with the skills to fully understand and communicate the needs of the client which allows for the effective integration of the archaeological response into the project programme, thus minimising the potential for costly delays.

His experience encompasses a wide variety of archaeological projects, including highways and large infrastructure projects in the midlands, flood alleviation schemes in the east of England and residential developments and mineral extraction projects throughout the UK.

David joined us earlier this year after moving from Museum of London Archaeology, one of the UK’s largest archaeological organisations, where he had worked for a number of years, managing and undertaking commercial developer led projects throughout the UK. He subsequently developed his role to include business development and marketing, expanding the business throughout the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Shropshire and surrounding counties.

Crestwood’s new Heritage and Archaeology service has already seen an increase in the number of projects undertaken by the company this year throughout the UK. The range and type of projects undertaken reflecting the collaborative specialist expertise provided by the company. Recent projects include:

  • A photographic heritage building recording of an historic dwelling in Derbyshire was undertaken as a requirement of a planning condition. This was carried out within the constraints of significant health and safety considerations. In collaboration with Crestwood’s technology team an innovative approach was devised utilising new computer software that allows for the production of accurate scaled images of the structure to be produced whilst ensuring that all health and safety considerations were met;

  • In Northamptonshire ongoing archaeological investigations, which began in June 2017 as a condition attached to planning permission for a development within the area of a former Roman town, have revealed evidence of Roman houses along with pottery probably belonging to the occupants, along with other artefacts. Investigations continue and further updates and photographs will follow in our next newsletter;

  • A Desk-Based Assessment was produced for submission of a new planning application in Bournville, Birmingham. This involved documentary research and a consideration of the location of the new development and its effect on the setting of adjacent heritage assets.

Our in-house heritage team provides a comprehensive range of archaeological and heritage services using in-house specialist consultants supported where necessary via a team of independent specialist associates. Being independent of governmental bodies and archaeological field contractors we are able to ensure that client interests are satisfied in the most economical and time efficient manner, our range of services include:
