Habitat Surveys

Phase One Habitat Surveys - Phase One Habitat Surveys are the industry standard in baseline survey and mapping of habitats, landscape features and plant species on a site, with a full species list and habitat classification.  An Extended Phase One is also available to include animal species, and highlight potential protected species issues.

NVC Surveys - NVC (National Vegetation Classification) are more in-depth than Phase One Habitat Surveys and can provide a more detailed profile of an area of habitat, and concentrate on the classification and description of plant communities such as woodlands, grasslands or heathlands.

Tree Surveys - BS 5837 provides guidelines for assessing likely effects of a proposed development and advises on reasonable measures for safeguarding valuable trees.  Crestwood Environmental can undertake visual tree assessments and research Tree Preservation Orders or other relevant statutory designations in the vicinity of your site, providing you with up to date information regarding trees and development.

Hedgerow Surveys - Undertaken in accordance with hedgerow regulations, a hedgerow survey is required where development may affect hedgerows or parts of hedgerows.  Crestwood Environmental can assist you in planning your development to avoid or mitigate any impacts on hedgerows, as well as provide a full and detailed Hedgerow Survey Report and Mapping.

Invasive Plants - This can be a specific survey for invasive plant species (both terrestrial and aquatic) including Japanese Knotweed, Giant Hogweed, and Himalayan Balsam, Parrots Feather, Floating Pennywort and Australian Stone crop.  Invasive plant species are also identified on initial Phase 1 surveys and the client will be notified of their presence.

River Corridor / Habitat  Survey - This is a system for assessing the quality of rivers and channels based on its physical structure, following  best practice guidelines provided by the Environment Agency.  The results of these surveys can also be used for further protected species surveys.

Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) - Is a survey that enables a surveyor to predict the likely presence of great crested newt in a pond by examining its aquatic habitat features, including the presence of fish, waterfowl and water quality.

Predictive System for Multimetrics (PSYM) - This standard method provides an assessment of the ecological quality of a site compared to ponds nationally. It requires basic environmental information including pH and identification of the plant species and /or invertebrate families found at the site.
