GCN LICL

Last year, our Associate Director, Lucy Cash, was one of the first to meet the criteria to become a Registered Consultant for a Great Crested Newt Low Impact Class Licence (GCN LICL), and is still one of only a limited number of Registered Consultants for this particular licence in the country.

The GCN LICL can be utilised for less complex projects where only terrestrial Great Crested Newt habitat is to be affected by development. It is a much more streamlined system avoiding the need for a full EPS mitigation licence which helps to save developers both time and money.

Lucy has put this option to good use and enjoyed recent success in obtaining a GCN LICL Licence for a quarry site for one of the largest quarry operators in the country. The works are due to be completed at the site in February 2018, and has provided a much more efficient solution to this particular project for the operator whilst securing the welfare of Great Crested Newts at the site and preventing any breaches in wildlife legislation.

Other examples when this licence may be applicable comprise temporary impacts, or negligible permanent impacts, affecting terrestrial habitats such as construction or installation of pipeline routes; boreholes and archaeological type works; installation of road signs and gantries, routine maintenance type works and small scale permanent habitat destruction.

Lucy has over 20 years’ experience as an ecological consultant, working on a wide range of both small to large scale development projects for various sectors. If you would like to make use of a Registered Consultant, then please do not hesitate to contact our ecology team (ecology@crestwoodenvironmental.co.uk).
